Profile

Professor Chris Brown is an internationally recognised expert on how societies make better decisions in an age of misinformation, political polarisation and rapid technological change. A Professor of Education and Head of Southampton Education School at the University of Southampton, his work explores one deceptively simple question: how do individuals, organisations and societies become better at engaging with ideas?

His research spans education, leadership, democracy, artificial intelligence and public policy, leading to the development of the concept of Democratic Intelligence: the capacity of people and institutions to reason wisely, learn continuously and act effectively in an increasingly complex world.

Chris is the author or editor of 24 books, including Leading for a Fragmented World, The Ideas-Informed Society, Being Human and the forthcoming MIT Press volume The Architecture of Collective Reason. His work has attracted more than £7 million in research funding and has been recognised through honours including the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award, NATO's Serge Lazareff Medal and Ecuador's highest educational civilian honour.

Alongside his academic career, Chris has spent two decades working with governments, universities, schools, businesses and international organisations to help translate research into practical action. Before entering academia, he served as Head of Research at England's Training and Development Agency for Schools and as a Senior Policy Adviser within the UK Ministry of Justice.

Today he advises organisations internationally on leadership, innovation, evidence-informed decision making and navigating uncertainty. His talks combine cutting-edge research with engaging stories and practical insights, challenging audiences to think differently about how we learn, lead and solve society's most pressing problems.

Chris is a highly experienced and engaging keynote speaker, having delivered more than 85 invited keynote addresses and guest lectures and over 100 conference presentations across Europe, North America, Asia and Australasia. He has spoken for universities, governments, research institutes, professional associations and education systems around the world, including events hosted by the American Educational Research Association (AERA), the International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement (ICSEI), OECD partners, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and leading universities across Europe, North America and Asia.

Whether speaking to educators, business leaders, policymakers or the general public, Chris is known for making complex ideas accessible, thought-provoking and immediately relevant, leaving audiences with practical ways to think more clearly, collaborate more effectively and make better decisions in an increasingly fragmented world.
